Jim Endorses Jim

Congratulations to Jim McMahan! Jim will be facing the incumbent in a run-off on August 21.

Over this really short election campaign cycle I got to know Jim McMahan more than most of the voters that supported him. He will be a fine replacement for the incumbent and I am enthusiastic about endorsing him for District 4 School Board.

Check out Jim McMahan's website, http://www.votejimmymac.com/ and give him your support!

Run-off update

It looks like Jim McMahan is the final winner for the District 4 seat. He will be sending H. Paul Womack into retirement.

A hearty congratulations! Now it's time to roll up the sleeves because the school system you're inheriting is in crisis.

Jim

Time to Choose!

It's Election Day!

Today, District 4 voters get to choose their candidate for School Board. The schools are in crisis. The incumbant offers no ideas better than "more of the same".

Jim Kinney, however, sees an opportunity to rethink how we approach education. As the only scientist stepping up to the challenge, I bring a much needed analytical ability to our schools.

It's not enough to just feel good.

It's not enough to simply believe.

Adequate is NOT enough!

Science for the Future

Each year, pundits loudly wail about the poor performance of American students in math and science.

The results of the standardized tests show DeKalb students in the same sorry state of affairs as most of the rest of the country as far as math and science skills go.

Each year, many thousands of students who are high school athletes graduate with the hope of going professional. The professional sports employment line has around 400 openings a year. So maybe 1 out every 500 kids actually gets paid to play ball. That's not good odds on a job.

SACS is not a thermostat

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, SACS, is the organization that holds the accreditation process for DeKalb County School System, DCSS.
As a candidate for DCSS District 4 Board of Education, I am studying the rules and regulations of board membership and ethics are a particular area of interest given the recent history of DCSS. Current board members have made comments, in conversation and in a campaign forum, that made me sit down hard and think about what they said:
